Moving With Kids: Four Things Every Parent Needs To Do

Posted on

Moving an entire household comes with a list of chores and errands that you have to complete. When you move with children, this list grows exponentially. For a successful move with kids, make sure to add these items to your to-do list.

1. Request Immunization and Medical Records

Before you move, stop by your child's pediatrician and request copies of their medical records. Make sure to get a full copy of their immunization records as well; most schools require proof that children are up to date on all of their vaccines before they will enroll them.

When obtaining records, don't forget information from the eye doctor, specialists, and dentist. You want to be able to give your child's new medical providers as much information as possible concerning past or current medical problems.

2. Research and Enroll Your Children in School

Once you know what your new address will be, you can research the schools that your child is eligible to attend. Your child may have a designated school to go to, or the school system may use zones when enrolling students. Zones are based on your address, and each zone has a few schools to choose from.

When researching possible schools, make sure to take into account a variety of information such as the school's report card, teacher to student ratio, extracurricular activities, and input from previous and current families with children who attended the school.

If you aren't happy with your options, see what alternatives are available. Private schools, charter schools, in-district transfers, and out of district transfers are all options.

3. Help Your Kids Purge Their Possessions

Before the move, help your kids go through all of their belongings and get rid of things that they no longer use or wear. By taking the time to purge their possessions, you cut down on the amount of items that you have to move to your new home. Also, you can take inventory to see what items your children might need for their new room, such as a lamp or additional storage for their clothing.

4. Assist Your Kids with Exchanging Contact Information

In today's digital age, it is a cinch for kids to stay in touch with their old friends after a move. Your kids can use video calling and texting to visit with their friends from across the country. Help them create note cards with pertinent information, such as phone numbers, email addresses, your new address, and any gaming or social accounts that they use.

As a parent, you want to make your move as easy as possible for your kids. Take steps to help them prepare for their new home by accomplishing these important moving tasks. For more information, contact local professionals like Wheaton World Wide Moving.
